Plus-Size Guide: Bold-Colored Outerwear

ASOS Coat in Black and Orange Check

I already have a great black wool trench, but I'm looking into getting on of the fun bold colored ones during all the great after Christmas sales. What color and style do you think is the best for a second winter coat?

A New Bold Scarf

A very thoughtful friend got me this wonderfully soft safari print scarf for Christmas. Looking forward to wearing this when I start teaching the 11th graders after break.

What I Got: Christmas

My parents (Mom) are really good gift givers. This year I got lots of neat things I wanted to share with you guys.

This bag from ModCloth will be perfect as my new teacher bag, I won't feel like a student any more with my backpack.

Books and DVDs are the foundational presents in my family. The books included John Hodgman and a book about the Women of Paris. DVDs to complete my collections included Reno 911! Season 5 and The O.C. Season 3. Hope Santa got you what you wanted this year!

Obsession du jour: Skinny Metallic Belts

Mirror Skinny Belt in Rosewood, Metallic Super Skinny in Gold, Mirror Skinny in Turquoise,
Shimmer Skinny Belt in Fuchsia, Royal and Bronze

Recently, I've been getting into skinny metallic belts in lots of different fun colors. I wear mostly dresses and these belts define the waist and serve as a perfect colorful accent. They're also super cheap! The ASOS ones on top are on sale for like $5-7 and the Forever 21 ones below are $3.80.  All the belts above are of course plus-size, but ASOS has all the same styles in the standard line, and they're on sale too!

Festival of Lights: ASOS Curve's Collection in Blue

Tonight is the first night of Hannukah. And though I'm not Jewish, it makes me want to look at lovely blue dresses. ASOS Curve is having a really big sale, here are some blue dresses and skirts perfect for the occasion.

What I Wore: Winter Morning

This morning my family and I volunteered for a local charities gift basket distribution...one of our Christmas traditions. My Mom and I helped give out children's books while the families waited for their packages, and my Dad was Santa. It was in the 30s outside when we left the house, so I dressed for warmth and holiday cheer.

With Daddy as Santa!

Striped Slouch Beanie, American Apparel,  Old Navy Plus-Size Trench, Moto Boots ,

I love American Apparel's unisex thermals, they come in a rainbow of colors and are great for casual winter wear. My boots are American Eagle, you can get this double buckle motorcycle style at any price point.

Merry Christmas from Maeby Fünke

This is my first post focused on Maeby's style. I have yet to do one because her tastes are so varying and trend driving, she is harder is harder to deconstruct than the other more consistent characters. That being said, I love her holiday looks. Here they are, along with some pieces inspired by them.

Holiday Look 1: "Afternoon Delight"

I couldn't find a floral sweater similar to Maeby's, but here are a coupled of pieces that would mimic the  bold print and scarf holiday for a family holiday party:

Sweater: Juicy Couture, Scarf: Piperlime, Overalls: Vintage Lee @ Free People

Maeby wears a lot of overalls, I did too in the early 2000s.

Vintage Floral Prints for Work

This dress I just got in two prints isn't really winter-ready, but I'm excited about it anyway. They are going to be so great for teaching when it warms-up next semester. The necklines are interesting yet very conservative, which is refreshing. I ordered both with the intention of returning one but I just couldn't.

What I Wore: Holiday Party

ASOS' Curve line has so many cute and reasonably priced holiday dresses this season. Here's the one I ended up picking:

ASOS Curve

Unfortunately, I was too busy enjoying the party to get proper outfit photos. I wore it with a flower headband I just picked up at Old Navy. The headband isn't on the website, but I'm sure you could find it at your local store or something similar but unique at Etsy.

For shoes, I went with with red velvet Gap City flats from last season. The maroon version of Old Navy's velvet ballet flat would work, or a metallic gold shoe.

What I Wore: Teachers Night Out

This week marked the end of all my projects for my first Quarter in my Teaching Credential/MA program. Needless to say we were all burned out and ready to celebrate turning in our big curriculum units. It was a couple of guys in the cohort (the group of fellow Social Studies teachers) birthday, so we stayed in and then headed out downtown. Here's how I overdressed, first the crazy leggings.

Forever 21 +

I know the picture's not very flattering, but I was focused on earning a "Good" singing "Islands in the Stream" on American Idol, not my posture:

After the jump, the rest of the pieces that tie it all together:

Plus Size Holiday Party Wear: Red, Lace & Sequins

I have a couple holiday parties coming up this season, but don't really have any money to spend at the end of the quarter with my loan money running out. That doesn't stop me from online window shopping for a few options. I let you know what I end up wearing.

Stage Style Icon: Gob Bluth

Apparently, Arrested Development is coming back in a very real way. Read all about it over at the NYT's Art Blog. I'm trying to manage my emotions, but I'm pretty psyched. I haven't done a Bluth Style post in a while, so today I've collected some images of Gob in his stage costume. As a performer, Gob understands the necessity of costume both for form and function. Here are a few examples:

From the Pilot Episode, rocking a baby blue suit with pocket square.
Gob's shows are all about movement, and his light suits move with him.

Colors for Fall

Highs are still in the 90's here in California's Central Valley, and I'm getting really tired of having to wear my summer outfits for student teaching. Something about deeper tones feels more professional. It will still be hot here for another month, but here are some transition and fall pieces I'm eying for my new teacher wardrobe.

ASOS: Curve
Forever 21+
Ruche Curvy

This Old Navy Dress, like the first one, will be good for the hot weather now, and cute with a sweater later. The color makes it feel more fall.

Old Navy Plus
ASOS Curve

This wine colored-knit skirt will look so cute with all the boots I bought last season working at Piperlime, and looks quite cozy to wear into winter with leggings. Here's more of that color over at Old Navy's standard line. A knit maxi would also be great for our mild falls, and solve my problem of finding a teacher approved hemline.

Old Navy

I have very little need for a heavy coat, but I love this retro styling and color.

Musings: Affordable Scarves

Delia*s Dress
Target Scarf

I was so excited by my Aztec-inspired prints post that I just had to change my dress form into an outfit with this scarf. I originally bought it for Cinco de Mayo, here's how I wore it then:

After the jump, a few more lovely scarves from Target to help with the transition to fall.
