Museum Musings: SFMOMA

Yesterday Edwin and I went to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, my first visit. I have a very closed mind in terms of Modern Art, so there were plenty of internal giggles and eye rolls at some of the edgier displays. I'm not saying a urinal on the wall at a museum isn't art, I just find it to be stupid art. That being said, there were plenty of pieces I found interesting and enjoyed.  I know my little digital photos don't to them justice, so you'll just have to go for yourself.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

I spend so much pop culture energy on blogging about Arrested Development, I feel like I've been neglecting movies lately.  As such, I have resolved to make sure to go to the movies once a week this summer.  I'm already a little behind, so today I saw Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It obviously wasn't the best in the series, but I was sufficiently entertained.

The most significant difference was Penelope Cruz stepping into the Keira Knightly lead female role. She certainly has the advantage in the heaving bosom department, and I liked her character. I thought the recurring theme of religion in the movie was interesting from a historical perspective, with the handsome missionary and Spanish characters.

I'm kind of really into the history of piracy in this period, so I could go on all day. Instead, I'll share some cute pirate inspired jewelry. To start with this pendant from ModCloth captures the feel of the one worn by Cruz' character.

After the jump, lots more fun nautical treasures to bring some rebel pirate spirit to your jewelry box!

A Couple Forever 21+ Outfits

I just got my first order from Forever 21 online in the mail this morning. My always thoughtful Aunt got me a gift card for my birthday, so I could "check out the competition". Thanks Magi! Now that I'm a fashion free agent (i.e. no more employee discount), I'm excited to try different online outlets.

Contrast Cap Sleeve Dress

Let's talk online shopping shop. First off, I placed my order with the free shipping option on Thursday evening and it arrived Tuesday morning (it shipped from LA).  So that was impressive. However, the former customer service rep in me would like to remind shoppers to always look at the promised shipping timeframe. If you need an order by a certain date, pay for the shipping that will get it there before your event. Don't expect it to always arrive as quickly as past orders.

I digress. More importantly than the speed, I liked the contents of my order.  A quick note on sizing, which is hard for you to determine from the photos since my dress form is much smaller than I. I ordered the 3X in both the skirt and dress, which means that their 3X is about an 18/20 (obviously not the same as Old Navy's). This also means that if you're a standard XL, their 1X might work for you. The prices were just as cheap as Forever 21's standard line which isn't always the case for plus size (probably since their plus doesn't go as large, the fabric cost doesn't catch up to them). Here are a couple of outfits I put together using my new pieces.

Red Carpet Rundown: MTV Movie Awards

As a teenager, I did love my MTV. And as a teenage film buff, I loved the Movie Awards. While I'm less excited about the awards these days, the show still provides stars a fun, less serious red carpet to end the awards season and promote their summer movies.  Here are their looks plus a couple trailers for their upcoming movies.

Cameron is a perennial favorite guest at the Movie Awards, and she always shows miles of leg.  At 38 perhaps she should think about a slightly longer hemline, but this playsuit is cute and perfect for the relaxed vibe of the show.

I love Emma Stone from Superbad and Easy A and even The House Bunny.  She will be appearing in Spiderman next summer. I am glad she has gone back to red hair after a short foray back to her natural blonde. Her weight loss does seem to have gone a little farther than I would have liked, but that's Hollywood.
