Man Musings: Charlie Day

Last Saturday I saw Horrible Bosses. I've already discussed my love for Jason Bateman in detail.  So you guys know how I'm a sucker for funny men with boyish faces. I also am a big It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Thus, I'm a Charlie Day fan.  He was really funny (I thought) in Horrible Bosses. Adorably ridiculous, as per usual. Here are a few pictures that show why this Julia and Dr. Julia (Jen Aniston) in the movie, are both fans of this guy (or at least his characters).

Red Carpet Rundown: MTV Movie Awards

As a teenager, I did love my MTV. And as a teenage film buff, I loved the Movie Awards. While I'm less excited about the awards these days, the show still provides stars a fun, less serious red carpet to end the awards season and promote their summer movies.  Here are their looks plus a couple trailers for their upcoming movies.

Cameron is a perennial favorite guest at the Movie Awards, and she always shows miles of leg.  At 38 perhaps she should think about a slightly longer hemline, but this playsuit is cute and perfect for the relaxed vibe of the show.

I love Emma Stone from Superbad and Easy A and even The House Bunny.  She will be appearing in Spiderman next summer. I am glad she has gone back to red hair after a short foray back to her natural blonde. Her weight loss does seem to have gone a little farther than I would have liked, but that's Hollywood.

¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Portland, OR: Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

Before we get to the fun parts of Cinco de Mayo, we have to first talk a little bit about the holiday. Let's start off by talking about what Cinco de Mayo is not. It is not the Mexican Fourth of July (Independence Day).  Mexico's Independence Day is September 16, and celebrates the beginning of their War for Independence from Spain in 1810. So if the Fifth of May doesn't celebrate Mexican Independence, what does it commemorate? The Mexican Army's 1862 victory over French Imperial Troops at the Battle of Pueblo, of course.  I recommend heading on over to the Wiki article for a bit more background. TIME magazine comments on the significance of this battle, "Mexico was still occupied by the French a year later, but the Puebla victory came to symbolize unity and pride for what seemed like a Mexican David defeating a French Goliath" (from the article, "Top 10 Drunken Holidays").

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the Mexican State of Pueblo, but otherwise it is an American Holiday. It is a day on which those of Mexican Decent and Gringos alike can celebrate the contributions of Mexican Culture to the United States; whether that be through music, food, dance,  or yes, downing a few cervezas y margaritas.

Denim Georgraphy: North America

Naming jeans' colors is quite a hard business. Apparently, many color experts have just given up and chose nonsensical names.  I've recently noticed lots of colors named after geographical terms.  Most of the names tell us nothing about the color of wash itself.  That being said, I find it amusing to associate the jean's color with its namesake locale.

Sacramento, CA: To start off close to home, a pair I'm seriously considering trying just because of the name:

Old Navy Mid-Rise Denim-Bermudas in the color "Sacramento"

Yahi: An extinct Northern California Native dialect. The last known speaker was Ishi. I'm not going to go into Ishi's amazing story, but you should really look into him if you're not already familiar.

Musings: Royal Wedding Adverts

I was amused at work yesterday to see that Canada Post is offering commemorative Royal Wedding stamps. I know he is going to be the Head of State/King of Canada some day, but it still, seems like it's reaching. The only thing my Quebecois callers like less (as a group) than Anglo-Canadians is the British. I found an interesting little survey on Canadian opinions of the monarchy.

Style Icon: Eminem

"I want to be remembered as a fashion icon because man, do I know how to f*cking dress." (See the video)

It's rare the the internet disappoints me.  I do feel however that not enough has been said about  Eminem's recent wardrobe transformation. For those of you who don't know, I love Eminem. Yeah I know it's weird for a bourgeois feminist with a gay best friend. But there you go.  I think he's a brilliant storyteller.  From a physical perspective, he was one of my favorite heartthrobs as a teen. Here's an example of his fine vintage self.

 

Even back in his baggy sweats period, I always appreciated his comparatively mild bling.  If bling is a sign of how successful a rapper is, Em was always so big that he didn't need carat weight to prove his clout. Look at him compared to Busta Rhymes here:
